Finding balance: A mother's plight

The Plight of Motherhood

Balance. We talk about it so much but what is it? According to Webster’s dictionary, (n) an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady; (v) keep or put (something) in a steady position so that it does not fall. Well, I don’t know about you but sometimes I feel so steady.

Multitasking

Multitasking. I find is an understatement as a mother. There are so many things that we worry about.  For example: Which outfit is my little one going to wear, will he/she keep the outfit on by the time we’re ready to leave the house? What am I going to cook for dinner that EVERYONE will eat? When is the last time I cleaned the bathroom the way I ACTUALLY want to clean it? and the favorite: Who is going to do the dishes? Obviously it’s going to end up being you. We all know that. Just face it, you have a lot on your plate, and everyone just keeps eating off of it. Whether you have one child or five, motherhood is a process. It’s rewarding, but can also be very overwhelming. The real question is: How do you make time for yourself?

I’ll share something with you. I have been struggling to find a balance with everything I do on a regular basis. I am currently in school full time (online of course), I work split shift hours (which is basically 7am to 6pm) I have a 3 and half year old (who is exactly like me….that’s not always a good thing) and I just started blogging and recently became a podcaster. So my schedule is a tad bit hectic. My husband is a huge supporter and helps out around the house and with our daughter. and for that I am grateful. But let’s face it, there are certain things around the house you just need to do yourself.

To be or Not to be Overwhelmed. . .

Being overwhelmed is perfectly normal. I learned that the hard way. I wanted my daughter to see that I can do it all and never complain. The thing is, I realized that it’s important for your children to see you at a low point and then watch you get back on the grind. That will motivate them to keep trying no matter what. My daughter says things like “Mommy you’re the best because you take care of me and dada”. Sometimes I have to stop and think, did she really just say that? This is how she thinks of me? When was the last time I washed your hair?

Comments like that are things that I cherish because I know I probably won’t hear these things by the time she’s 16. I love that she currently admires me in everything that I do. A friend of mine said to me recently that when she looks at me you can see the love in her eyes. That really resonated with me. My daughter truly looks up to me and that’s what keeps me going.

My 5 Self-Care Tips

So here’s what I’ve learned so far in terms of taking time for yourself:

  1. Schedule a day in the week to exfoliate your skin: This is something that I always forget to do, and when I do I feel like a whole new person.
  2. Plan a morning to sleep in: This is something that can sometimes be impossible but if you have a great husband or family members who will distract your child for an extra hour or so, go for it.
  3. When everyone is asleep, Netflix and chill by yourself: This is something I love to do. Make some popcorn, eat some ice-cream and just binge. (My daughter sleeps through the night so for those of you on the same page, just try it.)
  4. Listen to music while you’re doing something you hate to do: I HATE doing the dishes. I can’t stand there for too long. So I put on some soca music and whine my waist as I wash. (Any genre of music will do)
  5. Lastly, Sit on the floor with your family and eat dinner: I know this isn’t a part of mommy time, but despite the fact that you’re trying to find time for yourself, you also want to actually sit with your family and hang out. I don’t have a dining table so the three of us sit on comforter on a Friday night and pig out on pizza while watching one the unicorn shows my daughter likes. It’s a great time.

Bottom line, try to get to know yourself as a person before anything else, because that busy schedule of yours will get the best of you. Trust me, I know.

Sincerely,
